A Small Snapshot of Big Comedy Specials Coming to Netflix

  1. Ali Wong – Baby’s Gone Back

    1. A member of the audience at the original back to back Saturday night show taping in Toronto, Michelle Da Silva of NOW Magazine (@nowtoronto), writes that “Similar to her jokes in Baby Cobra, Wong’s new material smartly subverts feminist ideas around womanhood, marriage, sex, and careers.” Then goes on to mention she “has more than one deal in the works with Netflix (a romantic comedy starring Wong and Randall Park was announced in August)…” If you’d like a sneak preview of the material, check out Michelle’s article here.

    2. Here’s Ali Wong’s personal update…

  1. Judd Apatow – The Return

    • It’s out! I mean yes, we know he’s come back to stand-up, but here’s the official teaser trailer for the upcoming Netflix Special “The Return” which is set to release on Tuesday, December 12th, 2017. Here Judd announces the big news to a handful of supportive peers…

(Thanks to @AndrewHusband for this article on UPROXX.

    • Howard Stern news site reports this will be Judd’s first attempt at stand-up in over 25 years, and it’s not such a small crowd either, as associate Chris Gethard warns Judd “You have so much to lose” and Schumer jokingly pleads “Don’t do it.”

  1. Kevin James – An NYC Stand-Up Special

    1. Coming back to the stand-up game 16 years after his 2001 special “Sweat the Small Stuff,” Kevin James has taped a new special back in October at NYC’s own Beacon Theatre. This special is set to release sometime in 2018. Get more info from @JoeOtterson’s article for Variety.

  1. Chris Rock – Comic Royalty

    1. After an apparent bidding war (and eight years off the stand-up stage), Chris Rock signed a two-special deal with Netflix worth $40 million. We’ve heard from @KofieYeboah from that Ted Sarandos, the Netflix chief content officer, is a fan referring to Rock’s stand-up performances as “comic royalty” in an interview with Variety.

    2. The Netflix stand-up special was taped during Rock’s Total Blackout Tour in NYC, but no official release date has been posted on Netflix yet.

    3. Although there has been news revolving around Chris Rock and Adam Sandler’s upcoming Spring 2018 original Netflix film. Center Stage Comedy reports that production kicked off this summer in Long Island, NY for the film about the weeks leading up to the wedding between Adam Sandler’s daughter and Chris Rock’s son.

  1. Marlon Wayans – Another Netflix Special

    1. There has not been much mention of Marlon Wayans’ recent Netflix stand-up special booking. The Hollywood Reporter has stated that Marlon “will tape the program this fall in Washington, D.C. The special will be produced by Wayans, Rick Alvarez, Steve Harris and 3 Arts’ Michael Rotenberg.” No release month or date has been announced yet.

  1. Ellen DeGeneres – Shhh…wait, why are we being so quiet about this?

    1. Ellen DeGeneres is coming back to do a stand-up special 15 years after her last live performance! WOOT! It began as a small mention on Twitter from the streaming giant:

  1. Then confirmed the actuality of the deal on her show a day later and gave hope to fans, “It has been 15 years since I did a stand-up special. 15 years. And I’m writing it now, I can’t wait. I’ll keep you posted when and where I’m gonna shoot my Netflix special. I’m excited to do it; I’m excited for you to see it. And now, each one of you, you get to Netflix & chill with me. How about that?” (Thanks to Hollywood Reporter for supplying this article and quote).
